While the Algarve Summer Camp is rooted in the stunning landscape of Lagos, the bridge between our global community members is English. 🌳 By using English as our primary language, we create an inclusive environment where children from diverse backgrounds can connect effortlessly. This choice isn’t just about communication; it’s about fostering a worldschooling spirit where language becomes a tool for shared adventure, from surf lessons to creative collaboration.  🇵🇹

🌊 We speak English, but we’re flexible

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we embrace English as our primary language to foster a truly global community in the heart of Lagos. By using English as our common bridge, we ensure that every child—regardless of their home country—is fully included in our surf lessons, creative workshops, and nature explorations. This inclusive approach aligns with our worldschooling values, turning language into a tool for connection and shared adventure. 🌳

However, we remain deeply adaptive to the needs of our campers. Our international team of mentors is linguistically diverse, allowing us to pivot when the situation calls for it. If a specific group is homogeneously from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, or France, we have the fluidity to switch to their native tongue. Whether it is German, French, or several other European languages, we ensure that communication never stands in the way of a child’s comfort or enthusiasm. 🌊

This linguistic flexibility is a core part of our 1:5 mentor-to-kid ratio. It allows us to meet every child exactly where they are. While we encourage the use of English to build confidence and international bonds, we prioritize the emotional security and natural development of our campers. If a group feels most at home speaking their mother tongue, our mentors are ready to facilitate that experience, ensuring that every moment in the Algarve feels like home. 🇵🇹

Our program for our 1:5 english speaking Summer Camp? 🌳

The core of the Algarve Summer Camp experience is built upon the quality of human connection. By maintaining a 1:5 mentor-to-kid ratio, we move beyond traditional supervision and enter the realm of true mentorship. Our program is designed to honor the natural curiosity of every child, ensuring that whether they are 5 or 15, they receive the individual attention necessary to step outside their comfort zone in a safe and supportive environment. 🌳

This intentional ratio allows our mentors to act as companions in discovery rather than just instructors. In our daily flow—from high-energy morning surf sessions in the Atlantic to afternoon creative workshops—a mentor is always within reach to facilitate a „teachable moment“ or offer encouragement. For the younger children, this means a secure hand during nature trails; for the older campers, it means having a trusted guide to discuss sustainable building or coastal ecology. 🌊

In Lagos, we create a space where worldschooling values come to life. The 1:5 ratio ensures that no child is lost in the crowd and that every spark of interest is fanned into a flame of passion. By prioritizing small group dynamics, we foster deep social bonds and personal autonomy, allowing children to develop at their own pace while feeling part of a vibrant, conscious community. It is mentorship that empowers the spirit and celebrates the unique potential of every young explorer. 🇵🇹

Why English  works with our values 🌳🇵🇹

At the heart of the Algarve Summer Camp lies a commitment to the values of human dignity, trust, and the natural development of the individual. Our 1:5 mentor-to-kid ratio is not a mere logistical choice; it is a mechanical necessity for the atmosphere of freedom and mutual respect we cultivate. Drawing from the principles of Gerald Hüther and André Stern, we recognize that children do not need to be „taught“ as much as they need to be invited into a world of discovery. 🌳

This high density of mentorship allows us to move away from rigid, top-down instruction. Instead, our mentors act as „companions on a journey,“ providing a secure emotional base from which children can explore their own potential. With only five children per mentor, we can truly observe and honor the unique rhythm of every participant. This ensures that even our youngest explorers, starting at age 5, feel seen as subjects rather than objects of an educational plan, fostering an inner sense of security and enthusiasm. 🌊

In the vibrant landscape of Lagos, our ratio facilitates deep, authentic relationships. It allows for the spontaneous „play“ that is essential for neurobiological growth, ensuring that mentors have the time to listen, to wonder alongside the kids, and to support their autonomy. We believe that when a child feels safe and understood, their innate desire to learn and connect flourishes. This personalized attention creates a community where everyone—mentor and child alike—grows through shared experience and heartfelt connection. 🇵🇹
