At the Algarve Summer Camp, we embrace the „Ecology of Childhood.“ Following the visions of Gerald Hüther and André Stern, we view our age groups not as rigid categories, but as vibrant spaces for enthusiasm and natural discovery. 🌿
From Juniors to Teens, we replace pressure with trust and play. Here, children aren’t „taught“—they are invited to find their flow through surfing and nature, allowing their brains to grow through genuine joy and a deep sense of belonging. ✨
🌊 We accept kids from the age of 5
Starting at age 5 is a conscious decision rooted in the developmental philosophy of Gerald Hüther and André Stern. At this stage, children transition into a phase of immense neuroplasticity where the brain is hungry for „food for the soul.“ 🌊
In the spirit of Hüther’s research, five-year-olds have reached a level of motor coordination and emotional resilience that allows them to experience true enthusiasm—the „fertilizer“ for the brain. At this age, the natural urge to explore the world meets the physical capability to engage with the elements, like the sand and the Atlantic tide, in a meaningful way. 🦀
André Stern reminds us that a child of five is an expert in play. By welcoming them into our community, we honor their innate disposition to learn without pressure. They don’t need instructions; they need an environment that invites them to be. Whether it’s their first splash in the water or a creative project in the dunes, we provide the safe harbor for their spontaneous discovery. 🌿
We believe that age 5 is the perfect „golden window“ where the sense of „I“ begins to harmoniously connect with the „We.“ By joining the ASC, these young explorers experience a profound sense of belonging, building a foundation of trust in themselves and the world around them that will last a lifetime. 🤝
5-11 Eco-Explorers in Algarve 🌳
he Eco-Explorers (5–11 years) program is where boundless energy meets growing curiosity. 🌊 In the heart of the Algarve near Lagos, our 2026 season offers a dynamic mix of physical action, creative construction, and engaging academic modules that feel nothing like a typical classroom. ☀️
Group Activities & Sports: Team spirit is the heartbeat of our camp. Through daily group activities like football and basketball, children learn the value of communication and fair play. ⚽🏀 These sports aren’t just about the score; they are a universal language that helps our international students bond instantly. ☺️ There is nothing quite like a friendly match under the Portuguese sun to build lasting friendships and burn off some of that legendary 7-to-11-year-old energy! 🏃♂️
Building with Nature: We turn the wild Algarve landscape into a giant workshop. 🛠️ Our explorers learn to build structures using only natural materials—think driftwood shelters, cork sculptures, and stone-and-mud foundations. 🌵 This „hands-on“ approach teaches spatial awareness, basic engineering, and a profound respect for the Earth’s resources. 🥸 Seeing a project come to life from sticks and stones gives every child a massive boost in confidence and creative pride. 🏗️
Integrated Learning (Math, Science, Languages): Education happens naturally here. 🤓 Mathematics comes alive when we calculate the angles for a sunshade or measure the volume of water in our irrigation projects. 📐 Science is discovered firsthand by exploring local tide pools or experimenting with solar cookers. ☀️ Languages (English, Portuguese, German) are practiced „on the go“ during play and construction, making fluency feel like a natural byproduct of a fun summer. 🌏
12-17 Eco Awareness and Leadership
The Sustainable Leaders (12–17 years) program is a high-energy immersion designed for the next generation of changemakers. 🌊 In the rugged landscape near Lagos, our 2026 curriculum pushes teens to step out of their comfort zones and into their power as innovators and environmental stewards. ☀️ This is where the transition from student to leader begins, focusing on the practical skills and strategic thinking needed for a resilient future. 🤓
Discovering Strengths & Business Model Design: Leadership starts with self-awareness. 🧠 Through guided workshops and team challenges, our teens discover their unique strengths—whether they are natural facilitators, technical problem-solvers, or creative visionaries. 🥸 We take these insights into the world of sustainable entrepreneurship, teaching them how to design a business model that prioritizes the planet alongside purpose. 🌎 This isn’t just theory; it’s about learning how to pitch ideas, manage resources, and create impact in a globalized world. 📈
The Pillars of Self-Sufficiency (Shelter, Water, Food): True leadership is grounded in the ability to provide and protect. 🛠️ Our hands-on modules teach the fundamentals of human survival and thriving:
Building Shelters: Working with earth (Lehm), timber, and recycled materials to understand structural integrity and thermal comfort. 🏗️
Clean Water Systems: Learning the science of filtration, greywater recycling, and solar distillation to secure our most precious resource. 💧
