Frequently ☀️ Asked Questions

We know that choosing the right environment for your child is a big decision. Whether you’re wondering about our bumpy 3 km dirt road near Bensafrim, our 4-year safety record, or how bilingual learning works in the wild—we’ve got you covered 🗺️🛡️ Discover why our hidden nature sanctuary is the perfect place for kids to grow, far from the highway and close to the true heart of Portugal 🇵🇹✨

What is the Mentor-to-child ratio? ⚖️

At the Algarve Summer Camp, safety and individual growth are our top priorities. We maintain a strict mentor-to-child ratio of 1:6 ⚖️ This ensures every child receives the attention they need during our bilingual workshops and nature sessions 🌊

Is it safe to get here?

Absolutely! The ASC is tucked away in the hills, 3 km from Bensafrim via a typical Portuguese dirt road 🗺️ Yes, it’s bumpy, but perfectly doable for any normal car if you take it slow 🐢 Remember: you don’t get an authentic outdoor camp next to a noisy highway 🛣️ The prize for the dusty ride is total peace, safety, and a true nature experience far from the crowds 🌲✨

What can parents do during „Camptime“?

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we believe that for a child to truly unfold their potential, the parents must also feel a sense of peace and security. We offer a unique framework that allows families to stay in touch with the camp’s energy while respecting the child’s path toward autonomy. ☀️

For parents who wish to stay close by, we provide a shared office and kitchen facility located just 500 meters from the main camp area. This allows you to remain productive or prepare your own meals in a calm environment, knowing that your child is safely exploring the nearby nature of Lagos with our mentors. 🇵🇹

We also offer the possibility for parents to live and sleep on-site in our tiny houses or tents. This creates a beautiful opportunity to immerse yourselves in the sanctuary of Bensafrim, experiencing the same connection to the landscape as your children while maintaining your own separate space for rest and reflection. ⛰️

Our philosophy is to allow parents to stay in touch and also be „untouched.“ You are close enough to feel the presence of the community and be available if needed, yet you have the freedom to step back and trust in the self-determined development of your child. 🌊

This balance of proximity and distance fosters a deep sense of trust within the family. By having your own space to work or relax, you model a healthy sense of independence, creating a secure emotional base for the entire family to enjoy the summer journey together. ✨

How do you vet and train your staff (background checks, first aid)? 👮‍♂️

First and foremost, every potential team member must provide a clean criminal record and undergo thorough background checks. We prioritize safety as the foundation for all further exploration and learning. 🇵🇹

The interview process is deep and values-aligned; we look for individuals who don’t just „supervise,“ but who embody the principles of dignity, trust, and the ability to see the world with a sense of wonder. We look for a genuine resonance with the philosophy of self-determined development and a respect for the child’s autonomy. ⛰️

Once selected, our staff receives strong guidance and continuous training within our community. This includes essential practical skills, such as up-to-date first aid certification, as well as pedagogical guidance to ensure they act as secure emotional bases for the children. 🌊

What is your protocol for emergencies or specialized medical needs? 🚑

At the Algarve Summer Camp, the safety and physical integrity of every child are our absolute priority. We operate with a clear, established protocol to ensure a secure environment while maintaining the calm atmosphere necessary for self-determined learning. ☀️

For specialized medical needs, we maintain a detailed dialogue with parents before the camp begins. This allows us to understand individual requirements, such as allergies or specific medications, ensuring that our mentors are fully informed and prepared to provide the necessary support with care and dignity. 🇵🇹

In the event of an emergency, our team is trained to act with clarity and presence. All staff members are equipped with first aid knowledge, and we maintain fully stocked medical kits at our base. Our location in Bensafrim is strategically chosen to be a peaceful nature sanctuary while remaining within quick reach of professional medical facilities in Lagos. ⛰️

We prioritize constant communication and supervision, acting as a secure base for the children at all times. Our protocol includes immediate parental notification and established transport routes to the nearest international clinic or hospital, ensuring that professional help is never far away if required. 🌊

How do you handle extreme weather (heatwaves, storms)? ⛈️

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we work in harmony with the elements, ensuring that nature remains a source of joy and discovery rather than a risk. During the summer months, the weather in the Lagos region is typically very stable and calm, providing perfect conditions for outdoor exploration. ☀️

To handle the midday warmth, we utilize our natural surroundings to stay comfortable. Our base features a nearby lake where the children can cool off and experience the refreshing power of water, turning high temperatures into an opportunity for playful connection with the environment. 🇵🇹

We monitor local forecasts with great care and presence. In the rare event that severe weather, such as extreme heatwaves or storms, is officially forecasted, we prioritize the safety and dignity of the children by calling the day off in advance, allowing families to remain secure at home. ⛰️

Our approach is rooted in flexibility and trust. By respecting the rhythms of nature and providing spaces for cooling and rest, we ensure that every child can maintain their enthusiasm and physical well-being throughout the camp experience. 🌊

Is there 24/7 supervision, or are there „unmonitored“ free times? 🕵️‍♂️

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we provide a space where children can experience true autonomy and freedom within a secure framework of constant presence. We do not have „unmonitored“ times; instead, we practice a form of mindful accompaniment that respects the child’s space while ensuring their safety. ☀️

Our mentors act as a secure emotional base, remaining in the immediate vicinity at all times. While children are encouraged to stroll around, explore the landscape, and follow their own curiosity, a mentor is always no more than 30 meters away, maintaining a discreet but vigilant connection. 🇵🇹

This „listening in“ allows the children to feel the dignity of their own independent actions and the joy of self-determined play. They can immerse themselves in their discoveries without feeling constantly controlled, yet they remain under our protective umbrella at every moment. ⛰️

By maintaining this balance of distance and presence, we foster an environment of trust where children can test their limits and grow. Our mentors are trained to be attentive to the social and physical dynamics of the group, ensuring that support is always instantly available if needed. 🌊

How do you handle bullying or social exclusion between kids? 🚫

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we view every child as a person of immense dignity, and social exclusion or bullying is strictly unacceptable within our community. We foster an environment of trust where every individual feels seen, respected, and safe. ☀️

When conflicts arise, our mentors step in not as judges, but as empathetic companions to facilitate a clear and honest resolution. We believe that conflicts are often opportunities for social growth, and we guide the children to find solutions that respect the needs and boundaries of everyone involved. 🇵🇹

A child experiencing bullying is supported at all times with unwavering presence and care. We act as a secure emotional base, ensuring they feel protected and heard while we address the underlying dynamics of the situation with heart and mind. ⛰️

Our guiding principle is that no child is left behind; we actively cultivate a culture of belonging and enthusiasm where differences are celebrated. By fostering a strong sense of community and mutual respect, we ensure that every participant can unfold their potential in a space free from fear or exclusion. 🌊

We remain vigilant and proactive, observing social interactions with a keen eye for the well-being of the group. Our goal is to empower children to communicate their feelings and to develop the social intelligence needed to build authentic, supportive relationships

What is your policy on homesickness, especially for first-timers? 🏠

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we treat homesickness with deep empathy and presence, recognizing it as a natural part of a child’s journey toward autonomy. We act as a secure emotional base, ensuring that every child feels seen and supported during these sensitive moments. ☀️

Our approach is to be fully there for the child, offering a compassionate ear and a steady presence without pressure. We help them navigate their feelings by showing them the diverse opportunities for discovery and experience that our natural environment offers, gently shifting the focus toward enthusiasm and wonder. 🇵🇹

We believe that social connection is a powerful remedy for longing, so we actively help first-timers find „friend matches“ within the group. By connecting children through shared interests and collaborative experiences, we foster a sense of belonging that helps them feel at home in their new surroundings. ⛰️

Through authentic engagement and playful exploration, we create a space where the joy of discovery gradually replaces the weight of homesickness. Our mentors are trained to facilitate these connections with heart and mind, ensuring that every child finds the confidence to unfold their potential within our community. 🌊

How do you integrate children who don’t know anyone else? 🤝

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we recognize that the first steps into a new community are a significant moment in a child’s development. Since almost everyone arrives not knowing the others, we start from a place of shared discovery and equal footing for all. ☀️

We begin our journey with a variety of carefully curated „get-to-know“ games designed to spark enthusiasm and lower barriers. These activities are not about performance, but about creating a space where the unique potential of every individual can be seen and appreciated by the group from the very first hour. 🇵🇹

Inclusion is a core value of our community, and we place immense importance on valuing variety. We ensure that every child is integrated into the social fabric, fostering an environment where diversity is seen as a strength that enriches our collective experience in the nature of Lagos. ⛰️

Communication is handled with deep respect for the dignity of the child; everyone gets the opportunity to speak and share something about themselves. By ensuring that every voice is heard and every personality is welcomed, we create a secure emotional base that allows even the most reserved children to feel a sense of belonging. 🌊

Through this atmosphere of trust and mutual interest, strangers quickly become companions. We focus on connecting the children through shared experiences and playful exploration, ensuring that no one stands on the sidelines as they begin to unfold their potential together. ✨

Is there a „no-phone“ policy, and how can I contact my child? 📱

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we encourage an environment where children can fully immerse themselves in the world around them, fostering a deep connection with nature and their own enthusiasm. To support this state of presence and self-determined play, children usually do not have phones with them during their time at the camp. ☀️

We believe that by stepping away from digital distractions, every individual gains the freedom to unfold their potential and engage more authentically with their peers and the landscape of the Algarve. This space of „unplugged“ discovery allows for a much higher level of focus and genuine wonder in every activity we undertake. 🇵🇹

Safety and communication remain our absolute priority, and we act as a secure emotional and logistical base for both children and parents. Our mentors are equipped with phones and are available at all times to ensure that the bridge between the camp and home is never broken. ⛰️

Parents can reach out to the manager on duty at any time during the day. This ensures that you have a direct line of contact for any urgent matters or updates, providing peace of mind while your child enjoys the dignity and autonomy of their outdoor adventure. 🌊

How do you manage diverse age groups interacting together? 👦

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we see the interaction of different age groups as a natural and enriching way to foster social intelligence and mutual learning. We believe that when children of various ages come together, they create a living community where everyone can unfold their potential through observation, imitation, and collaboration. ☀️

We offer a wide range of projects that naturally bridge age gaps, such as gardening, building with clay, and woodworking. These hands-on experiences allow younger children to learn through the enthusiasm of the older ones, while the older participants experience the dignity of sharing their skills and taking on a supportive role. 🇵🇹

Sports like table tennis, soccer, and basketball provide a playful framework for movement and team spirit. In these activities, the focus is not on competition, but on the joy of the game and the individual development of each participant within a trusting group dynamic. ⛰️

Experiencing nature together provides a universal language that transcends age. Whether we are exploring the landscape of Lagos or working with natural materials, the shared wonder of discovery creates a secure emotional base where every child, regardless of their age, feels integrated and valued for their unique perspective. 🌊

By providing these diverse opportunities for experience, we create a space where social hierarchies dissolve in favor of authentic connection. This „multi-generational“ approach within the camp mimics real-life social structures, allowing children to develop a deep sense of trust and autonomy as they navigate the world together. ✨

What is a „typical“ daily schedule from morning to night? 📅

At the Algarve Summer Camp, our daily rhythm is designed to provide a secure emotional base while leaving ample room for the enthusiasm and self-determined development of every child. We move through the day with a balance of community connection and immersive projects in the nature of Lagos. ☀️

We meet at 9:30 AM to start the day in a calm, welcoming atmosphere. This is followed by our morning circle at 10:00 AM, a vital moment of connection where every child is seen and heard, allowing us to tune into the group’s energy and the individual potential of each participant before we begin our explorations. 🇵🇹

A shared breakfast at 10:30 AM provides the nourishment and social connection needed for the day’s first phase of discovery. From 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, we engage in our first project, where children can immerse themselves in hands-on experiences like gardening, building with natural materials, or creative workshops that spark their innate curiosity. ⛰️

Lunch is held from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, offering a time for rest and informal exchange. This is followed by our second project from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, where the focus might shift to sports, nature exploration, or collaborative building, allowing the children to continue their journey of discovery in a playful, pressure-free environment. 🌊

At 3:30 PM, we gather for our good-bye circle to reflect on the day’s experiences and celebrate the small wonders we’ve encountered together. This ritual ensures that every child leaves with a sense of accomplishment and belonging. Parents pick up their children at 4:00 PM, concluding a day filled with autonomy, trust, and the joy of learning.

What specific gear or clothing is mandatory vs. optional? 🎒

To ensure every child can experience the nature of the Algarve with comfort and dignity, we provide a clear framework for what to bring. Having the right gear acts as a secure base, allowing the children to focus entirely on their enthusiasm and the joy of discovery. ☀️

The following items are mandatory for every participant to ensure their physical well-being throughout the day: a hat and sunscreen are essential for protection while we explore the sunny landscape of Lagos. Children should wear comfortable shorts and a t-shirt, but also bring a long-sleeve shirt or a jacket, as the maritime climate can sometimes bring a refreshing breeze. 🇵🇹

Hydration and nourishment are vital for maintaining energy and presence. Each child must bring at least 1 liter of water and their own breakfast to start the day. While the ASC proudly provides a nutritious lunch for everyone, having that initial meal from home helps first-timers feel a sense of security and continuity. ⛰️

Optional items include extra clothes for those who dive deep into creative play with clay or water. While the summer weather is usually calm and dry, rubber boots can be brought along, though they are rarely needed. Any specific personal medication should also be included if necessary, managed with the trust and guidance of our mentors. 🌊

By arriving prepared, the children are free to follow their curiosity and immerse themselves in our projects without distraction. We value the autonomy that comes with being well-equipped for a day of adventure in the Portuguese sun. ✨

Are there hidden costs (trips, equipment rentals, extra food)? 💶

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we believe in transparency and trust as the foundation of our relationship with families. We ensure that once your child is with us, the focus remains entirely on their enthusiasm and growth without any financial distractions. ☀️

There are absolutely no hidden costs involved in our program. All our projects, whether we are building with natural materials, engaging in sports, or exploring the local landscape of Lagos, are fully included in the initial fee. 🇵🇹

You don’t need to worry about extra charges for equipment rentals or special trips. We provide the necessary tools and environment for every child to unfold their potential and experience the dignity of self-determined play in a secure, pre-planned framework. ⛰️

While we ask that children bring their own breakfast and plenty of water, the lunch provided by the ASC is part of the experience. We value the peace of mind that comes with a clear, all-inclusive approach, allowing you and your child to focus solely on the joy of the summer adventure. 🌊

Can I see reviews or speak to parents who sent their kids last year? ⭐

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we treat physical well-being as the essential foundation for a child’s freedom and enthusiasm. We maintain a high level of presence to ensure that the intense Portuguese sun remains a source of energy rather than a risk. ☀️

To keep the children safe and energized, our mentors remind them to drink water constantly throughout the day. By fostering this mindful habit, we ensure that their bodies remain a secure and reliable base for all their explorations and creative projects in the nature of Lagos. 🇵🇹

Sun protection is integrated naturally into our daily rhythm. We make sure that every child is wearing their hat and applying sunscreen as needed. This simple discipline is part of the respect we show toward ourselves and our environment, allowing the children to focus on their play with dignity and comfort. ⛰️

We are also very fortunate that most of our activity areas are naturally shaded by a variety of trees. This allows the children to engage in gardening, building, or sports while being protected by the landscape itself, providing a cool and peaceful atmosphere even during the warmer hours of the day. 🌊

Through this combination of natural shade and active care, we create an environment where the children can unfold their potential without physical distress. Our mentors stay vigilant so that the joy of discovery remains at the center of the camp experience. ✨

What is the cancellation and refund policy if my child gets sick? 🤒

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we operate as a small, dedicated community where every space is mindfully prepared to ensure a secure emotional and physical base for the children. To maintain the stability and quality of our projects in Lagos, we have a clear policy regarding absences. ☀️

We do not offer refunds in the event that a child is unable to attend due to illness. This policy allows us to maintain the high level of presence and guidance our mentors provide, as the resources and materials are already committed to ensuring each child’s potential can be fully supported. 🇵🇹

We understand that health is a natural part of life’s rhythm, and we encourage families to approach the camp with a sense of trust and commitment. By securing a spot, you are enabling the dignity of a well-organized environment where variety and enthusiasm can flourish without the instability of fluctuating group sizes. ⛰️

Our focus remains on providing a reliable and inspiring space for all participants. We value the transparency of this arrangement, as it allows us to focus our full energy on the children who are present, fostering a sense of continuity and belonging within the nature of the Algarve. 🌊

Do you provide transportation or a shuttle from nearby cities? 🚐

At the Algarve Summer Camp (ASC), we do not provide a dedicated shuttle service or transportation from nearby cities. We believe that the journey to our sanctuary in Bensafrim is the first step in a child’s daily adventure, often best experienced within the rhythm of their own family. ☀️

For families coming from Lagos, the camp is easily accessible. If you prefer not to drive, there are reliable public transport options, such as the local „A Onda“ or „Vamus“ bus lines, which connect Lagos to Bensafrim in about 20 to 25 minutes. This small transition from the city to the countryside helps set a calm tone for the day’s upcoming discoveries. 🇵🇹

By having parents handle transportation, we maintain a clear point of connection at drop-off and pick-up. This allows our mentors to focus entirely on being a secure emotional base for the children once they arrive, ensuring their full presence is dedicated to the projects and the natural exploration ahead. ⛰️

We value the simplicity and autonomy of this arrangement. It ensures that our resources are focused on the quality of the camp experience itself—fostering enthusiasm, dignity, and a deep connection with nature—while families remain flexible in their own travel plans around the beautiful Algarve. 🌊

How do you handle severe food allergies or picky eaters? 🥦

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we treat nourishment with the same respect and presence as every other part of the day. We believe that a meal should be a moment of connection and comfort, supporting the dignity of every child regardless of their dietary needs or preferences. ☀️

To ensure a secure environment, we prioritize clear communication with parents beforehand. By discussing the menu and any severe food allergies in advance, we can prepare our base to accommodate every individual safely, ensuring that their physical well-being is never a cause for concern while they explore the nature of Lagos. 🇵🇹

When it comes to picky eaters, we approach the table with patience and trust. We recognize that every child has their own rhythm and tastes, so we make sure there is something delicious and nourishing for everybody. Our goal is to offer a variety of choices that spark enthusiasm rather than pressure. ⛰️

By creating a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere around food, we encourage children to discover new flavors at their own pace. Whether it’s through simple, high-quality ingredients or the joy of a shared meal, we ensure that every participant feels seen and catered to, allowing them to focus their energy on their creative projects and social connections. 🌊

How much physical activity vs. downtime is there per day? 🏃‍♂️

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we respect the natural rhythm of every child’s energy. We believe that development occurs best when an individual can choose between intense enthusiasm and quiet reflection, moving according to their own internal compass. ☀️

Throughout the day, we offer a variety of active projects—from building with natural materials and gardening to sports like soccer and table tennis. These activities provide ample opportunity for physical movement, helping children connect with their bodies and the vibrant landscape of Lagos. 🇵🇹

However, we also recognize the vital importance of rest and the dignity of silence. We always maintain a dedicated silent area where kids can wind down whenever they feel the need. This allows them the autonomy to step back from the group’s social dynamics and find a moment of peace to process their experiences. ⛰️

Our approach ensures that there is no forced performance or exhaustion. By providing a secure base that accommodates both high-energy exploration and quiet downtime, we foster an environment where children can manage their own well-being and remain present in their discoveries. 🌊

This balance between activity and stillness is essential for a healthy, self-determined experience. Whether a child is running on the field or sitting quietly in the shade, they are supported in unfolding their potential at a pace that feels right for them. ✨

What are the sleeping arrangements (tents, cabins, or rooms)? ⛺

At the Algarve Summer Camp, our primary focus is on providing an immersive day-time experience that allows children to connect deeply with nature and their own creativity while returning to the secure emotional base of their families each evening. ☀️

Currently, no overnight stays are planned as part of the standard camp rhythm. We find that the transition between a day of intense discovery in Bensafrim and a restful night at home supports the child’s autonomy and allows them to process their experiences in a familiar environment. 🇵🇹

However, we are deeply committed to following the enthusiasm and interests of the children. If the group shows a strong desire for a communal sleeping experience—to sleep under the stars or experience the magic of the camp at night—we are open to making special arrangements to facilitate this. ⛰️

Any such arrangements would be handled with the utmost care, ensuring that the dignity and comfort of every participant are maintained. Whether in tents or under the open sky, the focus would remain on fostering a sense of community trust and a unique connection to the natural world of the Algarve. 🌊

We value the flexibility to adapt our program to the needs and wishes of the participants, ensuring that the camp remains a living space for self-determined development and wonder. ✨

Can I see reviews or speak to parents who sent their kids last year? ⭐

At the Algarve Summer Camp, we believe that trust and transparency are the pillars of a strong community. We recognize that for parents, hearing about the authentic experiences of other families provides a secure emotional base when choosing the right environment for their child. ☀️

We absolutely encourage this connection and have people ready to speak about their experiences. We can put you in touch with parents who joined us last year, allowing you to hear firsthand how their children unfolded their potential and found enthusiasm within our projects in the nature of Lagos. 🇵🇹

In addition to speaking with other families, we invite you to come by beforehand to look at the place. Seeing the landscape, the shaded areas, and the creative spaces in person allows you to feel the atmosphere of dignity and peace that we cultivate for the children. ⛰️

We value this open dialogue as it fosters a sense of belonging and mutual respect before the camp even begins. By meeting us and visiting our sanctuary in Bensafrim, you can gain a clear sense of the trust and autonomy that define the ASC experience. 🌊

We are here to answer your questions and ensure you feel completely confident in the supportive environment we provide. We look forward to welcoming you and sharing the wonder of our community. ✨
